Tales of living, working and enjoying life in the outdoors

February 15, 2014

We are doing a good job!

This a little different from the normal outdoor story this week, but it’s something I would love to share.

I picked up my daughter from school on Monday and, as I waited in the playground, I saw my daughter’s teacher heading over to speak to me. My first thought was “What am I going to roped into now?” But, she told me something that made me feel so happy and proud as a parent.

She explained that, on a Monday morning, the class has ‘My Time’. This is where the children in the class take it in turns to tell the rest of the class what they got up to on the weekend.

The teacher then explained how she really looks forward to hearing my daughter’s adventures each week. About how we go exploring forests, visiting beaches and hunting for fossils, collecting driftwood for art projects at home, throwing on waterproofs and getting down and dirty in the mud, also summers spent gorge walking or surfing and how she just loves listening to my daughter’s excitement at sharing these stories with her friends.

She told me how good it was to hear of a family that makes an effort, and that the quality time that we spend together really shows through, as my daughter was so interested in learning about new things and discovering new and exciting things.

To say I walked out of the playground with a big smile on my face was an understatement. It was lovely to hear and, as a parent, I guess we always tend to doubt ourselves. So, for someone to say “You’re doing a great job” was fantastic.

To all of us; the families who share our outdoor stories and adventures, those who spend quality time with our children, (even if we think we’re just going outside to play), and all those who value a “blow-through” just to feel alive, you should know that other people notice and realise the positiveness in these simple adventures, and you should take heart that, as parents, we’re doing a good job!

Thanks Lauren, we do have lots of fun on our outdoor adventures! Can’t wait to see what we get up to this year!

Lovely post! I totally agree, it really does show. You can often tell which kids have plenty of outdoor time at groups etc! x

Thank you, as a parent hearing that you are doing a good job is so lovely. We can tend to doubt ourselves to much!

Lovely post, sometimes when I, as a teacher, tell a parent what a great job they are doing I can tell they are delighted but shocked. I think it’s sad they only hear when things aren’t going so well instead of when they are. Here’s to many, many more outdoor adventures.

      Hi Kierna,
Thank you, parents can tend to focus on the bad stuff and won’t pat themselves on the back for the good stuff we do. It was so lovely to hear, the teacher didn’t have to say anything, but it made me smile for the rest of the day.
Thank you for letting us share our stories!

  4. I’m really pleased the teacher’s gesture struck a chord with you. All too often people are happy to let us know where we’re going wrong, but rarely where we’re doing well.
It’s fantastic that you’ve made your daughter so enthusiastic and that she then shares that enthusiasm. She’ll probably find herself a best selling author someday sharing her adventures and encouraging new generations to do the things you’ve taught her.
    Well done Kim.

      Hi David,
You are so right, people can tend to think negatively and miss the chance to say ‘I’m actual doing ok’.
I often think I’m taking my daughter outside because that’s what we do as a family, but from speaking to the teacher I realise now how much my daughter gets from it.
As always I love reading your comments, very positive and always make me smile.
      Take care.

That’s so awesome! It has to be wonderful to receive that sort of feedback. And to know that she’s likely inspiring others to get out and about more as well. I know I love to hear about your adventures 🙂

It was so lovely to hear. Also the teacher didn’t have to say anything to me, but her kind words really made me happy.
Parents need a pat on the back once in a while!

I bet you must be proud! We go out as a family into the countryside a lot, it’s just what we do but I know many kids don’t get such opportunities.

It was a bit of a shock to hear as going outdoors is something that we have always done as a family.
I always think its such a shame when other children don’t have the same opportunities and experiences of being in the outdoors.
It’s such a great way for children to learn.

  7. Outdoor play is such an important part of a child’s development and together with quality time with family makes for a great childhood. It sounds like you have lots of fun and adventures together and it’s obviously had a wonderful positive impact on your daughter. Thanks for linking up and sharing with Country Kids.

Hi, I really wanted to share my comment with the rest of the outdoor families that link up each week. Quality family time can be so hard, but with a little effort we can get such rewards.

  8. This is soo lovely! What a proud mummy moment 🙂 And thank you for reminding all us outdoorsy types that we are doing a good job with our littlies. Thank you so much for sharing at the Outdoor Play Party 🙂

So glad I could share my story. It’s not often you get a well done for doing a good job as a parent.
