Tales of living, working and enjoying life in the outdoors

A Very Lucky Day in Work

I wanted to share an experience that I recently had in work.

My job involves providing adventurous activities for children and young people throughout the Cardiff area. Many of the children I work with sadly don’t have the opportunity to get outside of the city, and aren’t able to experience different environments. For me, outdoor fun, adventures and play is a very valuable and important part of childhood, so I’ve seen and been a part of some wonderful activities and experiences with the children I work with.

Especially this week…..

On Tuesday, I had a very exciting text saying there was snow in Brecon, and that we were going to take a group on the hunt for snow. I didn’t think that we’d see much, as Cardiff was very wet and nothing had settled in the night like the weatherman had promised.

I was very wrong…..

As we drove along the road to take us to Brecon, the view was white. Everything was covered in snow. Not just a dusting, it was thick, thick snow!

Our first view from our mini bus

We parked opposite the Storey Arms outdoor centre, and the group got on their waterproofs, hats and gloves and everyone ran as quickly as they could to the nearby hill.

We all took turns in sledging, (thank you to my husband for my shiny new sledge!), and all you could hear were the screams and laughter from the group,(oh, and the staff!).

I think the staff were having more fun….

However, the best and my most favourite part of the day was when a staff member explained to me that one of the new boys in our group was rarely allowed outside to play. This was a very new experience for him. We found out that, at the age of eleven, it was the first time he’d ever built a snowman. So, we just sat and watched him enjoying the snow, throwing snowballs and launching himself down the hill. Just behaving like an eleven year old should, having fun. He was simply playing. I was so grateful that I was able to share and experience this day with him. It’s such a positive element to my job and really does cancel out any of those other “rubbish” days.

I wish I was allowed to share some photographs with you of the boys in the group, because everyone is so happy and it makes me smile when I look at them. Everyone has the biggest and best smiles on their faces, and it’s a privilege to be a part of it.

It was a really happy day, and a very special outdoor adventure for me!

It looks like you had a fantastic day for the sledging and sounds as if it was a treat for everyone who went. I often think the best days out are the unplanned random ones where you just get up and go! #countrykids

The sledging was so much fun, a brilliant day out. I agree that it was such a great day because we really didn’t think we would find that much snow, we were so lucky.

It was a lovely surprise eh?! Had lots where I am too on the other side of the Beacons. Not enough for a snow day off from school for me though which is a shame as it would have been great to get out & enjoy it, love the snow! Enjoyed the gorgeous views though:) glad you got out to make the most of it & amazing for the kids x

Hi Jo, a brilliant surprise, we really didn’t think we would see that much snow. Hope your views were just as nice, and lots of the children thought it would be enough for a snow day off school.

  3. It looks and sounds like you had a fantastic time. I know it’s your job to provide these activities but it’s fantastic to know that you put your heart and soul into it as you do.
I can’t being to imagine how excited a young boy must be to experience the environment you took him to for the first time in his life, when other children can take such things for granted, but I’m delighted to hear about it.
Thanks Kim for all you for in your job and that of course goes for all those of you who make life so special for those who are deprived of such normality.

      Hi David,
Thank you for such a wonderful and kind comment. I always think a thank you is an important and lovely thing to hear.
We had the most amazing day, we didn’t want to come home.
I always find it a bit sad of the lack of child experiences some of the children have missed out. However I’m so glad I get to provide and be a part of these activities.
      Thanks again,
      Take care,
      Kim

It must have been so heart warming to see that boy playing outside and building a snowman. I can just imagine the grin on his face.

Wow, what a beautiful day, I bet you really enjoyed your day out in the snow. Must admit I’m a little jealous as we’ve not had any here in Cornwall. It sounds like a magical day helping some of the boys experience what it’s like just to be a kid. Thanks for linking up with Country Kids.

Hi. How lucky we were to get that much snow! I was so surprised.
I’m sure when it comes to the summer time I will be jealous of your beautiful Cornwall beaches!

Oh wow, how wonderful you could share that first experience of snow with him, though I find it very sad that he has never built a snowman by age 11, it’s a basic childhood experience. Sounds like a fantastic day of fun.

Hi thank you so much. It didn’t make me a bit sad that he had such a basic childhood experience very late in life. However I felt so happy that we were able to give him a great day of playing.

  9. Those special moments make it all worthwhile don’t they. I really miss working with kids in this way, seeing them discover new things and revel in just being kids. Thanks so much for sharing at the Outdoor Play Party 🙂
